In 1964, the group was sued by their record label, Motown for breach of contract, for attempting to sign with another label. The case was eventually settled out of court and the group was able to stay with Motown.

In 1966, the group didn’t appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony, which caused a stir within the music industry. The group had made it known that they were unhappy with the lack of recognition they were receiving from the Recording Academy.

In 1970, the group was involved in a highly publicized dispute with Motown regarding their lack of creative control. The group felt that they were being unfairly treated and that the label was not allowing them to express their true creative abilities. The group eventually left Motown and signed with Dunhill Records.

In 1976, the group’s lead singer, Levi Stubbs, was arrested for disorderly conduct. Stubbs had allegedly been involved in a drunken altercation at a nightclub. The incident caused a public outcry, with many people questioning the group’s professionalism.

In 1979, the group was the subject of an FBI investigation after their manager, Elbert West, was arrested for embezzlement. West had allegedly been using the group’s money for his own personal gain. The case was eventually dropped and the group was cleared of any wrong doing.

In 1985, the group was again the subject of controversy after Stubbs was accused of sexual misconduct. The allegations were eventually dropped, but the incident caused a great deal of embarrassment for the group.

In 1989, the group was accused of plagiarism for their song, “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” The song was alleged to have been copied from a song by a British group called The Foundations. The case was eventually settled out of court, but the incident caused a great deal of controversy.

In 2004, the group was accused of lip-syncing during a performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The group denied the allegations, but the incident was seen as a sign of disrespect to the other performers.

In 2007, the group was again the subject of controversy when Stubbs failed to appear at a concert due to illness. The other members of the group performed without him, but many fans were disappointed by the group’s decision to go on without him.

Despite the controversies, The Four Tops have remained one of the most beloved and influential vocal groups of all time.
