Michael Jordan is a former American professional basketball player and former owner of the Charlotte Hornets. He was born on February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. Jordan attended Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington, where he starred on the varsity basketball team. Despite his prolific scoring and athletic prowess, Jordan was overlooked by major collegiate programs and instead attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
At UNC, Jordan quickly established himself as one of the top players in the country, leading the Tar Heels to a NCAA Championship in 1982 and earning a spot on the Olympic team as a freshman. He was also a two-time consensus first-team All-American and was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1984. After his junior year, Jordan declared for the NBA Draft and was selected third overall by the Chicago Bulls.
Jordan’s NBA career was nothing short of spectacular. He was a 14-time NBA All-Star, a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player, and a six-time NBA champion. Jordan was also named to the All-NBA First Team ten times and the All-Defensive First Team nine times. He led the league in scoring a record ten times and won the NBA scoring title in each of his first seven Seasons. Jordan was known for his incredible athleticism and acrobatic moves, earning him the nickname “Air Jordan.”
Jordan’s career was not without controversy, however. In 1993, he abruptly retired from the NBA to pursue a career in professional baseball. Despite his athletic ability, Jordan struggled in the minor leagues and returned to the NBA in 1995. In his comeback season, Jordan led the Bulls to an NBA championship and was named the Finals MVP. He retired again in 1999, but came out of retirement in 2001 to play for the Washington Wizards. He played two Seasons in Washington before retiring for good in 2003.
After his playing career, Jordan became a successful businessman and investor. He is a partner in the Charlotte Hornets and owns several restaurants and sports teams. Jordan is also a philanthropist, donating millions of dollars to various charitable causes. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jordan is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time and is often mentioned in the same breath as other all-time greats like LeBron James, magic johnson, and Kobe Bryant.
