Bernie Sanders is an American politician and the longest-serving Independent in U.S. congressional history. Sanders is a self-described “democratic socialist,” and is currently running for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020.
Bernie Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He attended Brooklyn College and then transferred to the University of Chicago, where he became active in the civil rights movement. After graduating in 1964, Sanders moved to Vermont and worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1979, he was elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and served for eight years.
In 1990, Sanders ran for the U.S. House of Representatives and was elected as the first independent from Vermont. He served in Congress for 16 years, until 2006, when he ran for the U.S. Senate and won. He has been reelected to the Senate three times since then, becoming the longest-serving independent in congressional history.
Sanders’ political career has been marked by a focus on economic justice, social justice, and environmental justice.
